I haven't fired a gun since I left the army well over a decade ago.

Now I want to buy a pistol for shooting and self-defense (although I doubt I'd ever need it for that) but I don't even know where to start.

Eventually I would also like to buy a shotgun and rifle just for shooting as well.

    Thanks.

I take it you are familiar with the Beretta M9, it's what I assume was your sidearm. There are many guns that operate like it out there. I would recommend a hammerless striker-fired pistol like a Glock (or one of the many likenesses) out on the market. The best thing to do would be to go to a gun shop and hold a lot of pistols. Find the one that fits your hand the best, and then rent one (if you can). The pistol you are comfortable with you will shoot the best.

Unless you're planning to carry a gun, you're better to use a long gun for self defense and I'd start there.

Thanks guys - I've asked some friends and they pretty much said the same thing and said going to a gun shop to try multiple pistols is the best thing to do.

I'm so surprised to see you here. Bravo.

Take an NRA course. Those guys aren't internet "experts" and you get hands-on experience with several firearms.

You can also find recommended books on the NRA's website, I think.

Just remember there are other guns out there that work just as well as a glock or xd. I'm not saying those are bad guns by any means, but you should find something that's comfortable to you and fits your hand.

CCW class is a good way to get some good hands on training and also get your permit at the same time
