I'm vacationing in Singapore shortly and was wondering if any of you guys had experience (or know someone who has) with camera stores in Singapore.

I'm looking to buy either a 5d mik2, or D700 (still need to get my hands on them to see what I like).

Or shoud I just buy in the states. Any benefit to buying overseas?

    Thanks.

if you're coming back to the states... I'd get it here. I'm almost positive there will be some kind of tax for you to bring those back into the country, but I could be wrong. :dunno:

I can get it back to the states no sweat. :squint:

I've also seen international versions of cameras significantly less than USA versions. Any thoughts here?

when i was in korea in 08, the exchange rate was really really good. normally, it would have been approx $1 = W960-980. however, due to the whole econ turmoil, the exchange rate was $1 = W1400. i could have gotten a d700 for $1950! and this was before they started adjusting prices to the exchange rates. at that time, japanese yen and chinese rmb were strong, so a d700 was more expensive in those countries at that time.

u.s. canon and nikon distributors won't fix their respective products if it's under warranty. instead, they'll send it back overseas and have them repair it and ship it back. this can take about a month. im not sure what happens if it's out of warranty though.

another thing is that if you purchase an item w/ a u.s. cc, the cc company will tack on an additional 5% of the purchase price. sometimes debit cards will charge you less than CCs, so call your bank and cc company.

I would purchase it here in the US, like mentioned above mainly for the warranty. I'm sure if you get it overseas you'll get an Grey Market camera opposed to a us one.

I just got a price quote from a Mr Raju at a camera shop in Singapore. Essentially quoting me 2200 American after the conversion for a D700.

Dude, go to Sim Lim Square.

I've bought several lenses in Singapore and they are all still working great.

Don't buy on the first floor though, head up to the 4th-6th floors. Better deals up there.

I'm pulling in on a "cruise" ship soon, so going to be all over. I'll make sure to check that place out. The only thing I'm worried about is the international warranty. Maybe it's just an arrogant American thing, I dunno.
