I hate to make yet another recommendation thread, but I'm kinda curious for some opinions of all you photographers out there.

I'm moving to Japan for a job in the middle of August, and will be out in the countryside area, which is a good setting for me finally getting into photography (I love outdoor scenery). I've always been interested in it, but never really had much drive for it before. Currently I've got a small pocket camera for quick shots with friends and whatnot, and a Canon Powershot A95 from a couple years ago, when I went to Japan before. The Powershot is nice, but I'm thinking of upgrading to a better camera. I'm really not looking for a full out DSLR, but the digital cameras that are a step below are intriguing me. I'm looking at maybe something along the lines of the Panasonic DMC-FZ50, but am wondering what you guys think. Should I try to jump into a better camera, or keep with the Canon for now and look for upgrades later? I don't want to spend too much on a new camera if possible. Thanks for the help!

Ah... that looks like a bit more than I was hoping to spend. I'm curious to hear how it is, though, once you get it.

I'd say up to about $600, absolute max.

Nikon D40 -- look at some of the posts in the forum here for example pictures from that camera. There's one labeled "Colorado" that's from a D40.

600 will get you the Nikon D40 easily, but that's a DSLR, if you're not looking for a real DSLR then 600 will get you plenty of the DSLR like cameras.

GE trying to get into the DSLR like camera field: http://www.general-imaging.com/cameras/x/x1.html

:dunno: Not sure how their cameras are, but they've always made good stuff to begin with

I would go with the Canon powershot S5-IS.

It's the best camera on the market that isn't an SLR.

If image quality and functionality are the most important things to you, thats the one to get.
