It will be my first DSLR camera, all I've used so far are p&s cameras. If I have $800, what camera/lens should I get?

you should get the one that you've held and shot with, the one that fits within your budget and the one that you prefer after doing the first two things. With that said, stick to Canon or Nikon and don't cheap out on lenses.

The Canon Rebel XTI with Lens kit.
Use that for a bit and see how you like it while you start saving for some good glass.

i went to bestbuy today to feel the cameras, the XTi feels way too cramped and uncomfortable in my hands. The nikon cameras felt a lot better.

In exact same boat with threadstarter, now the ultimate Nikon question:

D40(x), 50 or should I just splurge on the D80?

Most likely, Ill be looking for one thats all inclusive that comes with a lens already (as I have ZERO knowledge in lenses! Any tutorials/links would be greatly appreciated :hs: )

it really depends on what you want to shoot. Each camera brand has pros and cons but lens selection is also a determining factor. Sports/portraits/landscape/weddings/jailbait/etc. each have certain lenses that you'll want to use.

the d70 is a nice beginners/novice camera and that lens will do just fine but i'd suggest the 18-200 if you want that range instead. or, you could get the d70 from your friend and buy my 18-70 that came with the d70 a couple years ago!!! Great price shipped.

yeah the d70s would be a good choice (for your budget) and get a lens with a range of 17-50 (at least) and see which focal length you prefer most.

I ended up going with an xti since I liked the cannon lens selection. It's a little small, but it works well.

What are you getting with the d70? I sold mine for $350 and it was a little lower than I wanted. I think I could have sold it for no more than $450. $550 sounds a little high unless you're getting something else with it.

Fredmiranda.com . Although a lot of people are elite pricks. Used equipment prices on that dont seem too "cheap".
