This morning went to turn on my camera and it wouldn't turn on. Tried a different battery, still no go. I figured maybe they were both dead, so I charged them while I was at work then came home and it's still not turning on. I took it to a local camera place around here and the guy told me there's a short or the fuse went in it. What do I do? He said it would be a $260 flat rate repair for it, but I don't have that kind of money to get it fixed. What would you do? The camera is a Canon 40D :wtc:

You get no power at all? Not even an activity light when popping in a CF card?

If your good with electronic stuff you could take it apart and fix it yourself. I've seen some really good write ups on how to take it completely apart on the net. If your interested I could probably find the links for you. Its actually pretty simple.

$260 flat rate!!! I think I"m gonna fix cameras. I hope thats $260 and it works when there done no matter whats wrong, but I have a feeling he means thats $260 to open it up and tell you what you get to buy.

According to the person, it's a flat rate repair, not a flat rate diagnostic fee. If Canon charged 1/3 price of another 40D just to look at it, no one would buy Canon because of poor customer service.

if there's a chance its just a fuse, i'd pop the camera apart and look for one. then hit up radio shack and grab a new one. :dunno:

Next time, I'm buying brand new and getting some sort of extended warranty.

I recommend everyone who buys a Canon register it with Canon immediately. I did so with my 5D2 and they sent me a $100 Out Of Warranty factory service voucher good until the end of December 2010 from their rush repair center.

They also supplied the appropriate labels and stuff.

What registering the camera got me was...

    - $100 Voucher for Out of Warranty Repair Service
    - 3 working day turnaround time
    - 20% discount on service and parts
    - Priority phone service
    - Exclusive email support address
    - Auto e-mail notification of Firmware and software updates.

    I thought it was nice.

Even if they did, it would probably be only one year, and the camera is over a year old.

    Extended warranties are scams.

I would say this is true about 90% of the time. Which is why I don't get them.

For a TV or stereo that's going to sit there. Yea.

For something that's carried in a bag & stands a good chance of being damaged when out & about? Not so much.

if you read the fine print on most extended warranties (esp best buy's) they don't cover physical damage, they only extend the length of the manufacturer's warranty.
