I specifically want a DSLR for taking some action shots, I will be getting a dog and want it for that purpose, so I would assume that goes more into lenses.

    Budget: $1000-1500 to start off

Go into a camera store and pickup a Canon and a Nikon and tell us which one feels better to you. THAT right there is the hard part, everything else is somewhat straight forward.

why a canon or nikon when maybe an olympus or pentax would suit his needs? i would avoid cameras like the a700, its good and all but everything is so propietary.

i would suggest the E-520 kit

Because canon and nikon can fulfill the incoming addiction after buying the initial camera with more options. Nothing against pentax or olympus... but all I know of them is of their decent consumer P&S cameras they make. :dunno:

What about a Nikon D80 Kit you can get for like 800 bucks. Good place to start out and since his budget is 1500 that gives him room to figure out what else he wants once he plays with is camera. That's not spending more than he needs to.

Or Canon Xsi/450D...i just never saw any good kits from Pentax or Olympus for us noobs out there.

I don't know the quality of Olympus and Pentax cameras/lenses, but Nikon and Canon have a MUCH bigger product support than anyone else.

But like I said, go pick up a Canon, then a Nikon and let us know which one fits you better. I went into Wolf Camera and picked up the Canon/Nikon that I could afford and a Canon/Nikon that's way out of my price range (to see what the better cameras feel like if I ever wanted to upgrade).

Nikon stuck out like a sore thumb as far as ergonomics, so I went with that :bigthumb:.

When I bought my camera, my photog friends told me...spend the money on decent equipment now...and you won't have to upgrade as soon when you get better. Unless you really like buying new gear.

I hope they also told you that glass is more important than the camera itself.

of course...but I just got an 18-200 nikon lens. Which is a good starting point for me. Serves it's purpose of an all around lens to learn with...as i develop and save money i am slowly moving to better lenses.

I've seen people shoot with regular sandisks, I personally use the Sandisk Extreme 3's and have never had a problem with them. You can pick them up on amazon for around $30 for a 4 gig I think.

They're only doing 25% now? I thought it was 30%

Very nice choice. I've got the 40D and love it.
