I cant imagine they are accurate. If I run 20 min HIIT on a treadmill, (usually about 1.2-1.5 miles) it registers about 110-130cals. If I run the same on an elliptical it registers like 220-250cals.

Is there any level of accuracy to these counters?

the treadmills at my gym register more calories burned than the elipticals.
    treadmill > eliptical

I have never run on a treadmill that registered more calories burned than the same workout on an elliptical.

i'd figure they're about 2/3 correct. this is the conclusion i came to with my bodybugg (which is only 94% accurate)

what do you mean by 2/3? As in the number it displays is 2/3 of what you're actually burning?

No, only 2/3 of what the display shows. the machine would say i've burned 320 calories for like 30 minutes, when i got home and uploaded my results from my bodybugg, it estimated like 200 calories for those 30 minutes.

That's why when trying to measure calories burned I always punch my bodyweight at 100lbs in the machines so as to give myself a margin of error.

I'll go 20 minutes on my treadmill and get, say X...
I'll go 20 minutes on my elliptical and get, 3X...

Somebody's full of it, and I'm fairly certain it's the elliptical.

You have to turn off the self-esteem boosting feature. The switch is located under the machine you'll have to turn it over to get to it
