I noticed that Marcus Soares is referred to as "professor Marcus Soares" which kind of made me think about it. Does anyone else find it a little ridiculous? I mean the term really isn't appropriate, yes, he's a teacher but he doesn't lecture in academia nor do he do research in academia.

Even worse is when people give themselves names like "Queen Latifah"...go choke on a corn dog you fat bitch. :ugh2:

    It annoys me also.

Another thing that gets me is "master".

Just because its not at a formal college or university doesn't mean its not a school. You go and try to have good attendance, its hands-on like a excellent lab, good intructors have a curriculum to use for his students progression. Sensei, master, coach, teacher, whatever, as long I continue to learn what I want I really don't care what their title is.

Really I agree with you..I said teacher, instructor, master..the only reason I disagree with professor is because it has a formal definition. I agree it's a school as well, so teacher, instructor is fine with me.

I call all my black belts instructors professors and the brown belts coach. I do not mind and believe its just another way of showing my respect towards them.

I call my boxing/kickboxing instructors coaches and my BJJ instructors mainly professors. You seem to forget that BJJ itself is still a martial art with a history and formal "bullshit" within it.

To each his own though, I guess.

Makes me wonder how you all feel about bowing when you enter and exit the mat. I try to do it everytime like I learned at my first academy. However my current camp doesn't do that.

:dunno: either, its not a universal thing yet just like the "striped belts", I mean, I'm sure you wouldn't call a BB in Brazil Professor in English. But I believe that saying that or something is a part of MA history of showing respect towards those who teach you. If I didn't say professor, I'm sure I would be saying something else like "Sir" or something to show my respect to them unless they told me otherwise.

we call the head of our system Professor. He has more than earned the respect.

Anybody above 5th degree is master, and mostly anybody else that is teaching you is mr. Some schools are more lax than others, but my way of looking at it is; I wouldn't train under anybody I dont respect so I give it too them.

Our gym is about as far from a TMD dojo as you can get though.

Though in MT class they say something funky when they end class.

I've met and trained with Marcos Suares (That is if its the same one that used to teach kang) and he definately is a fuckin professor of BJJ. A virtual encyclopedia of tech and info.

If the person is good enough then call them that cause thats what they are. They might not teach in college but they are teching.

in BRazil the teachers are called (phonetically) Maestro - Master or Profesor - Professor they just brought it over. I call Liborio "Uncle Libo" in portuguese, as do the rest of the fighters.

im not a big fan of formalities. i do think calling them professor is a bit rich though. you dont call anyone else from any other sport a professor i dont think.

as a science student it also annoys me cause to be a prof. in science is quite an archeivment and a formal terminology. Therefore i find calling a martial artist a prof. is watering the term down.

however if they wanna be called prof. im not gonna stop them, im only a white belt in bjj :p
