I've considered the Yahoo! PC-to-phone plan so I could call home at 1¢ ($10 prepaid card) or even the AIM service for $14.95 per month for unlimited calling. It would give my family a local phone number to contact me around the world, but I'm skeptical about it. Does anyone use this or anything similar? What equipment would I need to have?

Alot of guys here use the yahoo PC to phone plan and all say they love it.. 1¢ minute is dirt fucking cheap. I don't have a microphone and dont see the need to buy one since i would never normally use it back in the states... I personally just use a calling card, Since I dont call home but maybe 3 maybe 4 times a month, Or I call DSN and tell the operator to connect me to where ever.

But yea, if your overseas alot...yahoo is the way to go that or skype

All you need is a computer, a headset and microphone, and a internet connection. Doesnt even have to be a fast internet either. Internet here is 90Kbps (10kb a second max download) and works fine.

I live in Okinawa. I dial 99-0071-1 then the area code and number. It's like 3 cents a minute. Tell your folks ot get an international calling plan and they will be able to call you for about that much too.

I use Skype. Works great. I also hooked up a regular cordless phone to my PC so it's just like talking on a regular phone. I also bought a stateside # so people can call me. The phone rings just like a standard phone line.

Or get Vonage or Sunrocket.. You'll get a local number, and if you can plug the device into an internet connection you got a live phone right there.

I'm not sure of your limitations and what not.
