In for info. Right now it's looking like I'll be shooting for a Bogen / Manfrotto 055xprob and 488rc2 ball head.

I bought a Manfrotto 3001BN and a 486RC2 head last year for ~$180. I think both are discontinued now, though. Pretty much work great for everything I use them for.

Will weight be a concern? I have a 70-200 and 580EXII that I may need to have supported depending on what im shooting.

    I went this way:

Slik 700DX PRO TRIPOD (LEG ASSEMBLY ONLY) - SL700DXLA

    Bogen / Manfrotto 486 BALL HEAD w/RC2 RAPID CONNECT - BO486RC2

Legs and head are both rated to hold ~15lbs, it goes from 6' high to 1' low and is absolutely rock solid.

My body + grip + 80-200 feels rock solid.

The only thing it doesn't do is extend to the side, which seems like a cool feature, but I had it on my old tripod and never used it.

amvona/dynatran is some good stuff for a pretty cheap price too .. i got a carbon fiber tripod with ballhead for $110 shipped .. used on ebay.

manfrotto is nice stuff but i got a 681B monopod recently and already had one of the legs 'slip' off and i had to readjust/tighten. it's slipped 3x already .. :ugh:

Cool those legs are less expensive than the ones I mentioned. Looks like same load capacity/weight too. $90 saved

I'm using a very similar setup. Manfrotto 3001N and a 484RC2 head. Got mine from an OTer at a really good price.
