I'm at a crossroads on which to purchase. I've shot a p226 9mm and I really enjoyed the way it felt in my hands but the p229 just appeals to me more. Can anyone let me know if they shoot similar? I haven't decided to go with 9mm or .40 so any recommendation will be greatly appreciated. This will be my 1st purchase so i'm leaning to buying used from a couple of reputable places located here in Mass.

    Thanks Again.

word, i was looking for one but found a great deal on a 229 so i bought that instead. the 228 feels so balanced and is prob the best 9mm sig has made though.

p228 is only offered in 9mm, and has a stamped steel slide instead of a milled stainless one like the 229 and newer 226s now. 228s were discontinued when 229s in 9mm were released since it's almost the exact same.

Both the 228 and 226 at one time were both made in Germany. At the time they used stamped carbon steel slides that balanced very well. The 229 is prolly cheaper to manufacturer because it uses a stainless steel slide that is cnc'd instead of stamped. The older version of the 226 and the 228 will last forever though.

it's cheaper and easier to use the stainless slide across all the different calibers of the 226 and 229 instead of using the stainless slides for .40 and .357 and stamped for 9mm

One day I will own a Gray'd out, way trick 228 - of this I'm certain. I used to be a big Sig guy, and that's about the only one I want again (well, besides a GrayGuns X5).

I think the 228 should rank up there with the G19 as all-time great workhorse pistol designs.

Need more Sig pics in this thread:

My last Sig. Bruce Gray 226, Nils, etc. Had it for a little over a week, then sold it to a friend to buy another CZ :hs:

I think I read on SIG forum that they were importing new ones (not to exeter) and were selling for $7xx.

Yeah, and I was excited when I first heard that, until I seen a picture.

Fucking railed 228's, with some kind of horrible overstamp hiding the M11 designators. Supposedly the consensus was from some SigForum guys who had them was that they suck. Shitty parts guns, with crappy triggers, and meh fitting.

Why Sig wants to put a rail on everything is beyond me..... I wish someone could find some surplus 228's a la P6's to dump on the market. I'd be all about picking up a 228 for $300.

that would work for me. =) but doubtfull it seems.

so that a 228 is prolly going to be impossible to come across which is better of the 2, 226 or 229?

You can, but if you are wanting a old 228 like me, you'll probably not be impressed.

Here's the thread pertaining to them:

    Here's some pics:

*edit* well dammit, I can't find the pics I had. Shit didn't look good though. Imagine if they took an electropencil and blocked off some markings on the frame. Two big square patches right where the M11 stuff should be:wtc:

You can still find used 228's in the 5xx range if you look. They aren't that rare. Both are smaller than a 226, which is a fullsize. Just kinda depends on what you are wanting....

I will never ever ever sell my P228. I just picked up a P220 that is very nice as well. I just wish sig would keep selling the P228. I need a backup/parts gun.

I've got a 226 in .40 that I'm absolutely in love with. Bought it used at $575 with a case and 2 mags, haven't had a single jam yet, and I have no problem shooting the staples off my targets with it at 11 yards. I like the 226 over the 229, but I'm 6'6"/320lbs, so I can see why a normal sized person might want a 229.
