I noticed that there are some sites where you can pay for a service which allows you to call someone and change the id of your number to any number you want.
I was wondering how this works, what software is used, and if it's possible to create such a system on your own computer.
for education purposes only of course

Caller ID is sent between the first and second rings, from your local telephone switch to their phone, if I remember correctly. Long ago, I heard that you couldn't send it yourself. But apparently you can. I guess they send the signal sooner, and the switch's signal is ignored.
