I have seen on the commercials of some dial up services that show when somebody is calling you while you are online a programs comes on and gives you a pop up like a caller id.

Does anybody know of any software that can do this?

For that you have to have a Caller ID capable Modem.
An easier solution would be to just buy a ringing Caller ID unit.
My dad has one that he keeps on the computer desk, made specifically for this purpose. just plug it in between the wall and the computer.

No, the software does that, but the modem has to be capable of reading the CallerID on the line to send that signal to the software so it can pop up. So what he's saying is that if you don't have a caller ID modem, then there's no point in looking for software to do it.
