How many of you would be interested in a little mini-meet of sorts?

Reason I ask is that I may be in San Diego for a week or two near the middle of October and would love to meet some of you in person. Drinks, dinner, whatever would be cool. I don't hit California that often anymore, so I am willing to drive for a while as long as someone can direct me.

I also would like to make a longer trip to wine country and obviously, the more the merrier.

This isn't for sure yet and I will be here on business, so I will have to be serious for a few days. After that, all bets are off.

I am off school the week of Oct 17th - I am travelling the 16th - 18th (in Oregon but have a 5 hr layover in San Fran), but for a drink I could be convinced to fly back... why I even have a place to stay in San Diego :)

So that being said, can charming Canadians come? Barring that, can I come?

Anybody is welcome! You would kinda put me over the limit in my little GTI though. I can seat 4 passengers, but the middle of the back seat is NOT a comfy place at all.
I'll probably be there around that time as well....unless I get sent to the Bahamas.

depending on what kinda time I can get, I'd like to head up towards wine country.
    Possibly with others accompanying me.

Um, if you guys are heading to wine country, you would meet me at SFO on the 17th for dinner. Like I said I have a 4 to 5 hr layover (will post the times / flights if this is of interest to you).

Unfortunately it is a pre-booked mileage run so I can't change the flights and go back later. But I could come back down :) Depending on dates etc.

Now, now - let's not hijack the thread. Some folks get a bit anal about that.

you know, the Santa Ynez Valley is also considered wine country in california - I was up there the other weekend, the scenery is pretty gorgeous and you wouldnt have to drive ALL the way up to norcal - a beautiful drive up the 101 through ventura and santa barbara, then just another 30 minutes past santa barbara and you have access to about a hundred of californias best wineries =) Napa is for wimps. :big grin: :big grin: Just a thought. And on that note, if you are in or around the SB area on a saturday/sunday, im game.

OK, assuming my boss removes his head from his rear and doesn't send me to the Bahamas, here is the plan.

I drive into Sandy Eggo for work and I'll be there (without a chance to get away) for a week or two. Depending on which class I have to coordinate.
The last day is when I'd be heading north.

I don't know much about California's freeways, so Mapquest will be my friend...unless I can convince some folks to play navigator. Since Insomniac called shotgun, she automatically gets nominated.
Originally, I had planned on Napa or Sonoma, but I completely forgot Santa Ynez. This, however would kinda limit the people we can meet up with unless they can be convinced to head south (Wolf and Bioyuki, this means you)
Anyway, go up, tour wineries for the day, have dinner and drive various people back to their cities. I'd either pack up and head back to Vegas that night (I prefer driving at night) or stay the night and have another day in California. I don't mind driving and it sounds like it would only be 2.5 hours from SD to grape goodness.

The whole idea here is to meet some cool people, have good wine and good food and take pictures to make others decide to join us the next time we plan an outing.

I'm about to call my boss and try to convince him that San Diego is a better idea.

your plan sounds great, and if its on a weekend, i will surely be able to join (unless school is somehow extremely overbearing -but im sure i can steal away for a day ;) )

think more on the lines of 3.5 - 4 hrs. Could be a LOT more too depending on LA traffic ;)

I can get some recommendations from my mom too on wineries to visit, she is a member at several of them up there and is kind of a regular (to Santa Ynez that is). I'm assuming Parker Fez is a must cause of the scene in Sideways ;) But when I was there, we went to a few others that were really great.

Is there not a way to skirt around LA traffic? We'd probably hit LA sometime in late morning-early afternoon on our way to pick you up.

Maybe this would be better with a little more time to plan and stay.
I'd just hate to get stuck in traffic and lose a good portion of the day.

I'm still trying to get a firm answer on the dates myself.
If I don't get an answer soon, I'm putting in for my vacation and going to California anyway...I'll be accompanied by someone else though. :hs:

there are pretty much only 2 ways through LA - 5/405. both of those can be pretty hectic but i'd lean toward the 5 being the fastest. The 405 seems to have traffic at all times of the day. as far as the 5 having traffic - it depends on the day and the time of day, you say early morning, would that be before rush hour or after, the best time on the 5 during the day is probably 11-1 (through LA) but then again,I havent travelled in LA traffic regularly in a while so i could be wrong about that now. I do think it would be safe to assume that this trip will take place on a saturday or sunday and that you would leave SD around 9am, which would put you hitting LA around 11, which would be good. If you have good company (insomniac this is where you come in ;) ) then traffic wont bother you. :mamoru:
