I've yet to purchase a firearm, but I have a question in regards to the purchasing of firearms through approved dealers.

What forms of ID do you need to properly identify your identity and age?

I've heard that Drivers Licenses are not valid forms of ID.

Whoever told you that is wrong. DLs are valid as are CA ID cards if you don't have a DL.

Long guns only require a CA issued ID.

Handgun purchases require a valid Handgun Safety Certficate, a CA issued ID, and proof of residency. The third requirement sounds weird, I'm sure.

Well for a Pistol, you also now need proof of residence.

this is either a utility bill, car registration, or renters agreement. thats IT, it must be one of those three with YOUR name on it, and matching your DL's address.

But the DL is a valid form of id, but for a pistol, you need the above as well.

Are you referring to handgun or longarm, since the requirements are different in CA for each :o

    :h5:

The more people that have AR-15s, the better.

He actually has a registered colt AR, but can't find his paperwork for it, so he's picking up a stripped lower to swap everything over to so he can go out shooting without having to go through the hassle of trying to get a copy of the registration(and risk what may happen if they've misplaced it as well)...

but still, it's someone else that'll be shooting more often now.

Have another friend that'll be picking one up when he has some more money. Being out of work for several months makes that difficult for him.

Thanks for all the responses guys, helps out a lot. I still need to wait a few years before legal age to purchase a handgun. In the mean time, I'm thinking about going to a few local ranges and trying things out. Btw, where do you get a handgun safety certificate?

Any FFL. It's just a written test with multiple choice questions.
