Police: Bystander Shoots Robber In Mall Parking Lot
    Two Suspects Remain At Large
    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28380721/
ORLANDO, Fla. - Police continue to search for two men who tried to grab a woman’s purse as she walked toward the Fashion Square Mall on Tuesday.

A third man was shot and arrested, apparently by a bystander who saw the robbery, police said Wednesday. Willie Keys-Fairclough, 29, who is hospitalized with minor injuries, was arrested in connection with the incident.

The incident began about 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday when the woman got off a LYNX bus and walked to an ATM to check her balance. She then continued toward the mall.

“She felt people come up to her, maybe one, maybe two,” Sgt. Barb Jones of the Orlando Police Department said. “They tried to grab her purse...She resisted. She started yelling, that's when everything started unfolding."

One shopper, who saw the men with guns, got his own.

“You had a citizen engage the suspects,” Jones said Wednesday. “There were some rounds fired."

The suspects ran across the street, and police said they found one man hiding behind a dumpster. The man had been shot in the leg but didn't know it.

The man, later identified by police as Keys-Fairclough, is charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault with a gun. Two other suspects remain on the run.

Sounds like Florida is getting to be a dangerous place to be a criminal.

Shit, the one murder-with-gun trial I sat in on, the killers shot this kid through his right arm, into the chest, through both lungs, and into the ribs/skin on his left side.

    With a 9mm 115gr FMJ ball round.

Kid was standing still, taken by surprise when they shot him, no drugs, maybe a couple beers or so in him, and he ran around like a jackrabbit for a few minutes before blood loss/lack of air/etc finally got to him and he collapsed. (died a couple hours or so later at the hospital)

This was already a lethal shot, though, and it didn't stop him, in fact it got him moving. Sure it killed him a while later, but had he intended on fighting back instead of running a full block at a dead sprint, he probably could have put some serious hurt on his adversaries.

Wait, you mean the criminals already had their guns out, and the law abiding citizen was able to get his own without getting killed? And they ran away instead of engaging in a gunfight?

Holy crap, this sounds almost like the leftys are wrong! This can't be true.

So some random guy saw some guys taking a woman's purse and shot them? I understand that it's armed robbery and theoretically the right thing to do, but if that guy had died, or decides to sue that guy, he has no claim of self defense.

What would YOU do in that situation, if it was fairly clear that they had no interest in actually hurting someone/engaging you?

He wasn't defending himself. He was defending a 3rd party.

From what I understand, Florida law allows you to use deadly force in defense of somebody else as long as it would be justified for them to use deadly force their self.

Also Florida's stand-your-ground law protects you from being sued by a criminal or their family, though I'm not certain if that pertains to just your private property or if it's the same in public like this.

In defense of someone else's life?

If I see the whole event and 100% sure who the BG is, defend them

If I do NOT see the whole even, and am NOT 100% sure who the BG is or what the circumstances are, back off and call the police

Pretty much every state allows you to use deadly force in defense of another person if that person would be justified in using deadly force in his own defense.

Gettting shot doesn't seem to have quite the effect that tv and movies would lead you to believe. That isn't at all an uncommon story. And now you know why modern terminal ballistics focus on forcing an attacker's body to stop when they don't have the courtesy to stop because you've shot them. :mamoru:

Black Knight: 'Tis but a scratch!
King Arthur: A scratch? Your arm's off!
    Black Knight: No, it isn't!
King Arthur: Well, what's that then?
    King Arthur: I've had worse.
    King Arthur: You liar!
Black Knight: Come on, you pansy!
[they fight again. Arthur cuts off the Knight's right arm]
    King Arthur: Victory is mine!
    [kneels to pray]
King Arthur: We thank thee, Lord, that in thy mercy -
[cut off by the Knight kicking him]
    Black Knight: Come on, then.
    King Arthur: What?
    Black Knight: Have at you!
King Arthur: You are indeed brave, Sir Knight, but the fight is mine!
Black Knight: Oh, had enough, eh?
King Arthur: Look, you stupid bastard. You've got no arms left!
