Okay, so it's come time for me to purchase my first Mac Laptop. I am just about to finish my Graphic Design degree and need something portable..

What do you recommend? Are there any new laptops on the horizon I should wait for?

The iBooks are 'brand new' in that their latest revision just came about a week ago, but for the the 'professional' a 15" or 17" PowerBook is the way to go. These won't be updated until early 2005 (or so the rumors go) so if you can't wait a couple of months, go out and pick up a 1.5 GHz 15" (or 17" if you really need the real estate space).

How late can you wait? You might want to hold off till January, that when new toys come out.

I'm in the same field as a profession and use a PowerMac Dual G5 desktop at home and 15" PowerBook for the road. If the Powerbook is your only computer, how portable does it need to be? If you will take it on the road once in a blue moon, I would get the 17" simply because the extra screen room comes in handy for projects. If you are on the move with your notebook eften, I would get the 15" PowerBook.

Either way, if you want the best for graphics, the PowerMac is by far the best investment, but it is a desktop. If you get the notebooks, avoid the iBook as it won't be up to par with graphic program needs. Get a PowerBook 15" or bigger and Max out the memory yourself from Crucial.com. Don't buy it from Apple since they are way over priced. Also, being a student, you can still get the $200 discount from apple as well as $50 off the 3 year extended warranty. I would get that. Small detail, if you get the 15" 1.5GHz the keys light up as the 1.3GHz 15" PB does not have that feature as well as the obvious performance differences.

They always release new hardware in January and in the summer at the 2 MacWorlds.

I suspect the new G5 powerbook will be out in Jan.

Dual core G4's before you see the G5 in the PowerBook.

Werd. G5 runs too hot for a notebook application. And I doubt you will see Dual G4 yet. Not enough room not to mention the PowerBook already get's hot as hell. Having an aluminum case doesn't help matters either.

True. Its worth waiting tho. Everything has been updated except the Powerbooks. They are due for a bump soon.

When I bought my Mac last month, I used my student ID from 1995 along with my GF's student ID so we could get discounts on both our Macs since they only let you get one mac a year with your ID.
