i went to a gun store today and asked them about what a good handgun for around $500 would be. he immediatly went to the case and pulled out a springfield xd-9 9mm, which was priced at $499. first of all, is this a good gun? second of all, is this a good price for this gun?

That seems high for an XD 9mm, im assuming it was the 4" model. You can find them cheaper, get them shipped to a dealer and transfered to you. If you want to support local business I would buy from them tho, they might help you out showing you how the gun works, answer any questions you have, and cut you deals on ammo and accessories. Is the XD on the Cali list?

    EDIT: I love my XD!

The XD can be found cheaper, but in your given price range I would recommend a Glock model 19 (9mm) or 23 (.40).

i love my xd-9 also but wish i would have gotten an xd40 when i found out that you can get a 9mm barrel for it for like 200 bucks and have 2 guns in one

499 is a little steep, they should be closer to 399 for the black, most places charge extra for the bi-tone

I will throw in my Ruger P-89T (9mm) great started gun and runs about $340...

I can get a XD-40 for just over $400.. so $499 is WAY to much

AMEN BROTHER!!!! Go CZ. I swear dude, if you shoot a CZ you will fall head over heels I promise. You can also go for the CZ-75 BD which is the same gun as the CZ-75 but with a de-cocker. You can also choose a CZ-75 SA (Single Action) or quite possible the easiest and safest gun to carry, the CZ-75 DAO (Double action only)

And ditto also on the Steyr pistols although the trigger might take a little getting used to, the sights are spectacular.

Ruger P-series would be the lesser on the price, but they are rock solid and reliable and will last forever
