I'm in the process of buying my first DSLR and have pretty much no idea.
I know any Canon or Nikon DSLR will be suitable for a noob like myself.
I've shopped around for prices here in Sydney and this is what I've come up with.

    Nikon D70s Kit (body + Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF ED lens) = $1200AU = $900US

    and

    Canon 400D(Rebel XTi) /18-55mm Black = $1200AU = $900US

Out of these 2 which should I go for?

    Thanks for any input.

I went with the Canon Rebel XT for my first DSLR purchase about a year ago. I also bought the kit, but soon after sold the kit lens and got myself a better lens. I would suggest saving some money and getting the body only and looking for a better lens to start with.

Don't get a camera because of the camera. Get the camera based on the quality of their lens and how it suits your needs. Not that i know anything :wtc:

I didn't listen the first time, and bought everything twice.

I'm leaving for overseas on an extended holiday and don't have the money to splurge on a lens i won't know how to make full use of.. and I don't want to be taking photos with my P&S Canon that's 3 years old.

I'm assuming the body of the Nikon D70 is better than the Canon Rebel XTi ?

Go play with both of them.

    I'd buy a 30d personally. Wheel ftw.

If you can afford the 30D you'll love the wheel, mini-joystick type thing (for panning around in pictures) the 2.5 inch LCD, and... the buffer is nice too. Never filled it.

Ohhh, well in that case... The rebel XT still takes great pictures and will be hella cheap used soon.

I'm not a huge fan of the ever increasing pixel densities. The added benefit from two extra MP probably does not outweigh the increase in noise, or the (probable) decrease in dynamic range.

I have a D70s and I like the way it feels in my hands. I didn't get the same from the Canon, felt less sturdy. Theyre both great cameras so like everyone would agree...go to the store, play with them, think about it and decide for yourself. If you know what you're doing you can do some damage with either.

Looks like a friend is selling his 20D, not sure of the price or what he's throwing in with it. This maybe a better option

of the two you're looking at, the d70 looks like the best bet for what you want because its kit lens is one of the best you can get right now. you'll be hating the 18-55 kit from canon because its cheap and somewhat limited. but if you can save, i'd suggest it and possibly get a d80 body with a tamron 18-50 f/2.8 or sigma 18-200 f/3.5-5.6.
