I want to buy an M1 Garand in Service Grade condition from the CMP. I'd just like to say how much of a pain in the ass the process is to buy one.

For starters, I gotta get the damn order form notarized which is a pain in the ass, then i've got to provide proof of citizenship and my Florida drivers license isn't sufficient  so now i've gotta go get a passport, then I have to be a member of a CMP affiliated organization which i'm not, so I had to join the Florida Sport Shooting Association which i've never even heard of before for $20 and i've got to provide a photocopy of my membership card with my CMP order form and it says it'll take 4 weeks for my membership card to arrive.

I hope all this effort is worth it in the end. Has anyone here bought an M1 Garand from the CMP before? What condition grade did you get? How was it? Anything I should know about buying an M1 Garand from them?

    :o

Obviously its worth it, since this is the only place you can get them that cheap.

At least you can buy one of those legally :mamoru:

Why go through all that trouble. Screw them! Go to a gun show and spend 3 times the money, but without all that "trouble". :fawk:

It's just a little running around to save you a bunch of money.

The paperwork for CMP may be a little cumbersome but is definitely worth it. I purchased a Service Grade HRA Garand a couple of years ago and got a real nice rifle. Metal was good and muzzle wear was good. The wood was a little dinged but this doesn't bother me.

Not only are you saving yourself a lot of money, you're helping out a good orginization that is trying to get these gun's into civillian's hands.

You should check out the CMP forum if you have specific questions: http://www.odcmp.org/new_forum/

I've thought about it.. but I don't know if I want to go through all that trouble.

EDIT: I just read through their requirements.. how the hell does holding an FFL or C&R license indicate Marksmanship? :ugh:

    What is a C&R?

    Curio & Relic license.

allows you to buy older guns, surplus guns (mausers, K31's, enfields, etc), and have them shipped right to your house, instead of going through an FFL and paying a transfer fee

I toyed with the idea of getting one until I realized that I'd never use it. :hs:

Yeah what Krott said, except to correct him in that a C&R ACTUALLY is a type of FFL.

I just found out it takes 6 weeks to get a passport. FUCK. I could just submit a copy of my birth certificate but I don't know if I feel comfortable sending that, i'd rather send a passport.

Depending on condition, matching numbers prices vary greatly excellent condition with all matching numbers probably close to 2 grand. I think CMP is selling them for 4 or 500 says on there page. I got mine in a trade for a dirtbike.
