I bought 2 laptops early in the year, one foe me, one fore my wife. Both Compaq Presarios, and we've both been very happy with them. Hers is a Presario 2100, and mine is a Presario R3300. Both AMD powered, so we were able to get the most computer for the money.

What happened to your Sony? I've had a Vaio for a few years and it's great.

MY mom has a Compaq Presario and she loves it. It's jsut an XP-M 2400 512MB 60GB machine...so not a power house. MY dad has 2 IBM Thinkpads, both P-4 i believe, very durable and never had an issue with them. Seem better built than most laptops, although lacking for gaming due to low video capabilities.

    What is your budget?
What will you use this machine for?
Do you HAVE to have any features in it...like maybe itHAS to be a widescreen or something?

What do you use the laptop for? No one can provide a proper suggestion without knowing this.

my sony laptop was having power issues. It would just turn off after using it for a few hours. My friend also had the same issues with his sony vaio and they stated he had a bad power board. Mine has reached the point where it will no longer turn on anymore. It is almost 4 years old now so I think it is time to upgrade. It will be mainly used for school work such as doing matlab simulations and other ee programs that I use in school. It will also be used alot for entertainment purposes such as burning music and watching anime etc. Thanks

I'd recommend an Apple PowerBook or iBook, unless you have Windows-only apps that you need for school (I'm almost certain there's matlab for Mac, since you can get it for Linux, but I'm not sure what else you're using). If a Mac isn't an option, the IBM notebooks are quite nice, as are the new HP's.

Dell 6000 best bang for the buck. If you want tiny get the 700m.

IBM makes a great laptop but the price is usually up there.
