I am thinking about buying my dads shot gun (cant rember the brand off hand. I can post pics if i decide to.) i was wondering what kind of paperwork if any is there needed to fill out or exchange when doing a firearm transaction. My dad was a cop for 30 years he thinks all I do is give him the money and o get the gun. What do you guys think

i've bought several guns from private parties... just exchange the cash for the firearm and you're done!

I'm seeing a lot of places you just exchange the money and the firearm. Depends completely on the state laws.

In LA you just exchange the money, etc. You don't have to do an FFL or anything. In fact, here it's legal for someone 18 to purchase and posess a handgun from a private sale but 21 through an FFL.

CA requires a FFL dealer to complete the transaction.

You maybe able to do the transaction without doing a PPT transfer. FFL transfer is a transaction made from dealer to dealer. Since it is within family, you may not need to do a PPT, but just simply fill out paperwork showing the transfer to a family member.

It's Utah. You don't need to do an FFL transfer. It'd be perfectly legal for him to give the shotgun to his son.
