I'm looking to spend no more than $1000 on a decent digital camera. Which camera in that price range do you prefer? And which would you warn me against spending my money on?

I'd say buy use. It's amazing the amount of camera you can get for the money just by buying used! The Canon 30D or 40D used are dropping in price and are great buys!

If it's your first DSLR - be prepared to spend more on lenses/flashes/tripod etc.

The body is just the tip of the iceberg.

If you go the used route, you can probally pick up a used 30d, Tamron 28-75 f2.8, and maybe even a 430 EX flash.
