I only want one sub. If I buy the 2 ohm model, can I connect it to a 2 ohm stable amp and have the amp run in 2 ohm mode? I figure if this is the case, I won't need to buy a crazy powerful amp.

Basically, if I only want one sub, should I buy the 2 ohm or 4 ohm model?

If you buy the 2 ohm version you need to buy a 2 channel amp that is stable at 2 ohms mono (on the expensive side) or a monoblock amp that is stable at 2 ohms (inexpensive and very common).

If you buy the 4 ohm version any plain jane 2 channel of decent quality that fits your power requirements (probably 250-300W) at 4 ohms mono will work. Alternately you could buy a 4 channel amp. Use the front channels to power your front stage and the bridge the rear channels for the 12W3.
