Bulking with Minimal Carbs - does it work?

    Ran into a guy i used to fight train with. He's back in Canada after being in Switzerland for a few years. He's dropped the MMA thing and is now body building. He's probably the leanest i've ever seen anybody irl (full leg muscularity that's fucking mind blowing).

    He's 5 weeks into bulking, and says he's bulking low carb with refeed every week?

    He says his body isn't reaching ketosis, but he's still able to burn fat as fuel. Does this make sense? What's the science behind this?

    He's probably on a boat load of gear, and could starve and still be anabolic

    carb cycle, go carbless on days off to increase insulin sensitivity, on days you workout, eat carbs and a lot of them so you are anabolic going into the workout, keep protein high everyday.

    im familiar with carb cycling, and have done it myself. carb cycling requires carbs more then every 7 days. he's under 40g, at least 6 days a week

    Technically, I guess you could. As long as you're well above your caloric maintenance via protein/fats you could "bulk"... but I'd have to imagine that being pretty difficult.

    Chances are, if he's bulking on low carbs, and adding mass WHILE leaning down he's got more gear than a high school football team.

    yes, I do mine on a eod workout plan. If you also wanted to be super anal, before any large protein meal, take 5g leucine and wait 10min before taking in your protein so net protein synthesis will be up in your body.

    Anabolic diet.


    Keep in mind, this is how the guys back in the day used to bulk....whole eggs, steak, and heavy cream. It worked for them, so it could work for anybody.

    i eat 1 cup of oatmeal pre workout and 2 scoops of waxy maize post workout.

    Really? So back in the day top bodybuilders and strength athletes added muscle by eating ketogenic diets?

    Yeah, pretty much. Maybe not purely ketogenic (nobody knew what that meant back then anyway). Go look up diets for some of the old school bodybuilders and you'll see these are the foods they lived off of.


    Oh, I left out the 60+ liver tablets a day:mamoru:

    isnt it i vince gironda that started that. i read somewhere he recommends eating a few dozen eggs a day on a bulk

    I think it's basically 3-4 meals a day with unlimited red meat and whole eggs, heavy cream mixed with protein powder, lots of green veggies, ass tons of liver tablets, and you eat a big ass carb meal every 3-4 days.
