well, my dad is a big left winger, myself being in the center, he even went to that protest in DC a few weeks back, and i'm going to build him an AR. He's not a gun owner, but he's always gone w/ me shooting and he just expressed interest in getting one for himself. well, i decided i'm going to build him his own, and have it done by Christmas. My mom's gonna kill me. I just bought a Colt M4 military upper, and I'm going to build it on a RRA or Mega lower with a 6 pos stock, and maybe an Eotech if i can afford it, but if not, just a flip up iron sight.

here's the all Colt upper i just bought, except the guy threw in black handguards instead of the OD green:

I am a novice when it comes to rifles, I would like to build one too.. links to said guide, I looked before and didnt think I found anything.

I might try to get one already assembled.

if you just wanna put the upper and lower together, but the upper, and the lower, and slap them together.

i'm buying the upper and building the lower. the upper has a bolt/carrier/charging handle, so i'll need a stripped lower, lower parts kit, stock, buffer tube, buffer, buffer spring. there's guides on AR15.com

I would be happy buying parts and putting them together, just wondering how you find out what parts you need and how to assemble if you never did it before.
Isnt it cheaper to do it that way?

well it's pretty simple if you're not building the upper. building the upper gets complicated, and u probably shouldn't do that unless you really know what you're doing, since things need to be precise. the cheapest thing to do would be to buy the upper and build a lower. i expect to come out with around 700 dollars in it for a very nice rifle. buying a complete one is a lot more, and i wouldn't do it.

For someone on a budget who donest want to end up with an Olympic arms plinker I would love to put it together myself. I guess I got to do some reading?
Is it just an upper and lower and put them together, I assume this includes barrel, trigger etc and you have a tad more flexiblity with what parts and options you choose.

yea, you just put the upper and lower together, push in two pins and shoot. if you shop around on AR15.com's classifieds, and take your time to buy, you can build a rifle for 500 dollars. one guy on the forums made a complete carbine for 450. it won't be the best, but it'll be decent. you can put together a nice rifle for 600 dollars though, probably something you'd pay 1,000+ for prebuilt.

i bought this 24" RRA upper for 450 dollars a couple weeks ago, with the bolt, carrier, and charging handle. only 100 rounds through it.

for another 200 dollars, i'll have a complete rifle. that means that for 650 dollars, i'll have a rifle that goes for 1,100 dollars buying complete.

Yeah I am looking for something to mainly plink with.. I am thinking of trying to get an AK here first part of 06 and would like to eventually build (snap together upper and lower since it sounds cheaper) an AR-15... might be better to buy in parts.. so just an upper and lower, snap together and hit the range, sounds good.

ok, here's your plan to build a rifle...

go to AR15.com and wait until you find a COMPLETE upper, including bolt/carrier/charging handle for around 300-350 (very good deal). then buy a complete Cav Arms lower (complete polymer lower including EVERYTHING) for 160.
you'd get a complete rifle ready to shoot for

    300-350 + 160 = 460-510 dollars complete ready to shoot.

there's a reason why people are willing to pay much more for an AR.
