I'm gonna be building a very basic system for a friend of mine this week... nothing fancy, thinking a P4 2.4 or an AMD ATHLON XP 2600... I've looked around newegg and googlegear but haven't found any particularly spectacular deals on MB's or chips - are any of you aware of any MB/chip combo being sold anywhere this week for a good price?

    thanks for any info guys

Yeah I could see how my description could be a bit deceptive, the system in my eyes will be no big deal, just something that will atleast last for a fair amount of time w/o require a big upgrade for em. I decided on the 2.4 range cause the prices weren't that much of a big leap from one to the other within the low 2.0 range.

I still consider the 600 to 900 range to be basic.

hehe i'd take 350+ up mid range. if it compiles gentoo in 4-7 days, its ok. if its 7+ days, its basic. (im gonna try a gentoo install on a 266 next week)
