I've used AMD chips for the last 5yrs but I think I wanna make the switch back to Intel, thier chips are just as cheap and perform alot better especially when o/c.

    Whats OT's thoughts?

I've been using AMD for the past 4 years, and I'm going Intel when I get my tax refund.

Also, 2.4 800Mhz FSB can be overclocked nicely to 3.2. :) Can't wait to oc mine. Not sure if this is with the stock heatsink or not. I have a Thermaltake so I wouldn't really be able to say if it would stay cool or not.

There doesn't seem to be any yet. I'm surprised none of the AMD people came out. Usually see a few in post about building computers.

    I've got a 2.6C running at 3.38GHz right now :o

    My suggestion:
    2.6C or 2.8C
    1GB PC3500
    Abit IS7-E or Asus P4S800D-E

I'd go Intel at this very moment. Although as soon as 939 Pin AMD 64's are available with a Nvidia Nforce 3 250 board, I'd probably go with that.

I thought that historically AMD was cheaper than Intel??

Mind you, I haven't kept up to date on all the stuff for the past couple years...

Probably not, unless I get bored one day or something. I figure this will be fast enough for me, the main game I play is from 1998 anyway :o

With your new speed you'll be tempted to play new games... I promise :o

I think a 2.8C can be had for $180-190 right now, and it'll overclock to around 3.4-3.5GHz on some reasonable air cooling. :o

If price is a factor, AMD.

Had this discussion the other day... If you're investing a lot of cash and want upgradeability for the long term future then wait 3-4 months until the new socket platforms are rolled out by AMD and intel.. Other new tech will include the introduction of .. pci express, ddr2, new chipsets, BTX case/mobo changes, more sata stuff.. Seriously wait if you can...

The 2.6/2.8 chips also have Hyperthreading (which the $85 Abit IS7-E supports).

I only offer those two chips up as a more cost-effective solution... same with the motherboard. :)

None of the new-fangled stuff will be truly affordable for months... and I don't mind selling off an 8-month old machine for $500 :o

Cool deal. I'm not really tight, but I may consider going the 2.6/2.8 rought and overclocking anyway, the money I save could go towards more RAM, or something else...

Thanks for the tips, I've been out of the hardward loop for a while :o
