I haven't kept up with computer technology for the better part of five years, and I am ready to build myself a new computer. I've spent the last couple weeks trying to figure out as much as I could, scouring anandtech, newegg, here and tom's hardware, and I think I've got a decent noob's understanding of the technology I want and what its going to cost me. With the pricedrops in Athlon X2 yesterday, its time to get serious. I just took some time on newegg to build myself what I think is a pretty decent computer for what I want to be doing. The price point works out pretty well (about 1200 including monitor).

If any of you could look over my list of components (with the newegg links) and see if there were any problems with compatibility, stupid decisions on my part (I'm pretty set on that processor and thats about it) or better buys that you could point out to me, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Processor- AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (170$)

    Final Price ~1200$

This computer is going to mainly be a media center for me. Mostly playing games, listening to music, making videos, and homework. I've had all the discussions about dual vs. single core and I am deciding to go dual core because I would rather jump on the next technology there rather than go single core for pure gaming performance.

If anyone can give me any useful input I would greatly appreciate it.

you MUST run memory in pairs with that system. Huge performance hit if you don't. Run two sticks of 1GB Corsair Value Select.

Not a fan of LG optical drives. Get an NEC.

Please get a Seagate SATA drive, instead.

Recommend a better case. Silverstone LC series is PERFECT for media centers.

    Better power supply.

The computer is going to sit under my desk, and all the LC series cases I can find look like horizontal layouts that would take up more space under the desk. Is there some advantage to that layout?

Well, I assume that you were doing a true "media center" pc, which would be installed as a component in your AV setup... So you'd probably have it sitting on top of your audio receiver, in the same stack with your component DVD player, etc... The LC series cases were designed to fit perfectly in these environments and to really blend and look like they belong.

If you're not doing that, then get the Silverstone TJ series. The TJ-02 and TJ-04 are both excellent looking cases.

I cannot find Corsair DDR2 800. I am pretty sure with the mobo selected that is what I need. Should I just bite the bullet and get 2 Gigs of DDR2 800?

OK. I had just been reading tons of complaints about AM2 and RAM issues. This (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820141062) is the other RAM I had been considering. If I am willing to spend that extra money is it worth it to get that?

    don't get pqi.

Honestly, I think the AM2 is a sorry excuse for a release from AMD. But if you like to sackride, go with what you want.

Eventually, the apps you run on that machine will max out all of its components, no matter how good they are. You can buy the RAM now, or you can buy it later, but you'll buy it eventually.

i disagree... The AM2 isn't that great, and memory will not be the first thing needed an upgrade

Could be. Having 2GB of RAM, though, will keep his computer quieter because it won't need to hit the HDD to use the swapfile, since he won't even need one unless he'll be rendering 3D or using AutoCAD.

pair your memory with same brand/model/size, that case i've never heard of, but if you like it alot, first do some research on it, and if it doesn't have alot pf problems, i don't see a problem in getting it. beaware you may need a RMA, so if you dont' want ot waste time with that, i'd grab a well known brand. same goes for your power supply, but without the aesthetics. that's about it, all your other parts look good!

Agree with all he said, except I have had bad experiences with Seagate, I much prefer WD.

I'd go an Antec for your PSU, they've never failed me.

Seagate > WD. Proven time and time again.

Antec is overpriced generic crap. Enermax, Sparkle, and PCP&C are the better choices.

You're shitting me right? I've had two Seagates die for no reason (10GB 5400RPM, 40GB 7200/2MB), and I've used 3 Samsungs in builds a year old with no issues now.

After one and a half years the board on the 40GB blew out, smelled like peanut butter and piss when I turned my PC on. My motherboard couldn't even do so much as detect it.

The 10GB had random arm failure when installing Linux.

Besides, in my opinion, Samsung drives run cooler and quieter than their competitors.

THIS I agree with. The Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB IDE models were an insult to human achievement. Mine had random arm failure after not even two full years of service, much like many other buyers.

It wasn't even under load, just went *POOF* when I was using AIM. Sounded like marbles theirafter.

Antec isn't crap, but I do feel they are HIGHLY overpriced. I'm personally more of a Sparkle/Silverstone guy, myself. I <3 my new Silverstone.

Don't get an SLI mobo if you aren't running SLI. It's unnecessary. Also I would get this Ram instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227030

Get a better GPU: This one is killer:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130032

Your PSU is going to be really loud. With 3 fans in it.
Your Case IMO is hideous. Why would you want that anywhere someone would be able to see it. My 2 cents but if you like it then it should be fine.

Those are some suggestions I would make.

Otherwise nice build and Good Luck
