She's 12 and her K6-2 333 isnt cutting it. I'm hoping to spend no more than $400.

    Build or buy...any suggestions?

I found this but there isnt an AGP slot. I cant see her playing too many games on it since she has a PS2. I can get it locally for $500 AR.

$400 is for a system alone.

for a 12 year old that should be plenty especially if she's not one to tinker around with it.

whats the specs on the old pc and would you be willing to sell?

Its a K6-2 333, 192 MB RAM, 6.4 GB HDD, ATi Rage Pro PCI card. Its all based on a 430TX board so no AGP. It started life as a Cyrix PR200 :barf: in 1998.

I dont think its worth very much.

honestly, for what she probably does, you will not beat those "loss-leader" systems.

    Would there be much of a difference between that 2.66 @ 533 Celeron and a 2.4 @ 400? How would the two compare to a P4 2.8?

I configured a Dell that was similar specs but a 2.4 instead of a 2.66 and had a 17" LCD instead of a 15" that was a few dollars cheaper with no rebate.

EDIT: RAM runs @ 333 on the HP & 400 on the dell.

celeron at 400MHz FSB is crap.

Good to hear, I didnt want to wait for the dell anyway. It was going to be almost two weeks before it would even ship. Gonna try and pick the HP up tonight.

    Thanks jollyogre.

    Already bought the Compaq.

Explain the evilness of HP. Been working on them since the merger and Compaqs before that. I have about zero complaints with them. The cases are built well and very easy to work with. :hsugh:

I hate the case that I have on my old one. The fucking drive bay slides out, and you have to disconnect every drive to get to the RAM. What bullshit is that? They just suck. They don't preform as well as a system of the same specs made my IBM or Dell would.

Don't get me started on the reliability of LaserJets. They only have one real Achilles' Heel...dumbass users armed with inkjet labels. :nono:
