Friend of mine wants to build a gaming computer. I would select the parts but I have been out of the loop as far as new hardware is concerned. I built my computer over a year ago, I have no idea what the new hotness is. Any ideas?

Is the AMD FX still the best gaming processor? Nvidia or ATI?

i think most people would recommend a quad core c2d processor and some crazy expensive nvidia card

ati and amd haven't been able to keep up recently, imo

    this makes perfect sense

get this magazine that tells you all the parts to put into your new awesome system, but then don't put any of the parts in it because its 4 times bigger than your budget :ugh2:

I would pick up a dual-quad-core-socket Opteron board, as much RAM as it can hold, and build up from there. Screaming fast hard drives would be key -- don't be fooled by sustained transfer speeds, it's random-access transfer speeds that really matter. Then I would get a really good PSU (not necessarily high-watt, but really reliable), and lastly I'd buy a single CPU with whatever money I had left, and wait until prices come down enough that I can buy two of the best CPU the board can hold.
