    Looking for some advice here.

    My current desktop is hosed.
My laptop is not powerful enough.

So, I'm looking to build a desktop computer soley for gaming. I don't do much gaming at all, but when I want to, I can't, because my current computers suck too damn much.

I REALLY want to try out the new Supreme Commander RTS game that's coming out in a week or so. And I'd like to build a rig that will run it with ease, for a MINIMAL amount of $$$. I'm a poor ass college kid.

-So, since I'm not real computer tech savy, I figured I'd leave it to you -guys.

    What parts do I need?

    -8800GTX/S?
-Intel Core 2 whatever? What model would be good? Doubt it will be overclocked.
    -Good sound card?
    -Mobo?
    -Raptor HDD?
    -2-4mb RAM? What kind/brand?
-Should it be water cooled or is that overkill?
    -best CPU fan?

Who can build me (give me an idea of what and where to buy) the best rig for the least amount of cash? :x:

If I use your specific info, I'll Paypal ya $5. :mamoru:

    Go. :wavey:

You're a "poor ass college kid" that has $400 to spend of a gfx card and yet ony willing to shell out $5 for someone to build you the fucking thing?

    E6300
    8800 GTS
    P965 Motherboard
A single 320 GB Seagate Perpindicular Drive
    2 GB Corsair XMS2 RAM
    400 to 500 watt PSU
    A single CD/DVD R/RW combo drive

That should cover all your computing needs while being pretty cheap (only really expensive item is the graphics card).

That said, this machine will be very future proof as well. You'll be able to take advantage of DirectX 10 (which Supreme Commander supports) and you're all ready to handle anything Vista throws at you. With a moderate overclock on the E6300, which it can handle easily, and with the 8800 GTS you'll be good to go on ANY current games and you'll be set for a good long while provided you don't have a monster monitor.

The only thing I reccomend, however, is waiting a month or so before buying a sound card. Supposedly Vista is nullifying all the current EAX sound cards, so we'll have to see what happens when the dust settles.

Don't worry about payment. Buy a sub, then do a search for the Supreme Commander thread in the main forum.

I agree with TekDragon mostly on the build.

I would probably go with a non perpendicular drive though, as I've heard they
    are very loud.

The Raptor would probably only make a small difference, and since you don't do a lot of gaming,
I don't think it's worth the limited capacity.

Also since you don't plan on overclocking, I would spend the extra $100 or so
to get into an E6600 Core 2 Duo for the 4mb of cache plus being faster.

Oh, and same thing about the paypal. Use it for a sub.

The perpendicular drives are a little louder, as in they're not completely silent like older Seagates, but they're still nothing compared to a Raptor.

Maybe it's hit and miss, I don't know. But when I got my Seagate 500gb drive, people were complaining about unusually loud drives on newegg.

(which by the way is going for 20 bucks less on newegg already  )

As far as the Raptors go even under file transfers, I can barely hear them running. At least in my Antec case, anyway.

I'm surprised to hear that. Do you have the older 8mb versions?

I have a 74gb and 150gb Raptor. Each one is the 16mb version, and
even with the side panel off, the seeking is not loud by any stretch.
With the panel on, I can barely hear the seeking even though I'm sitting
    right next to the case.
And at idle, they are downright quiet.

There is an audible hum at idle -- I would say somewhere around 30Hz -- though that's because the plastic fascia on my case is vibrating. (I really need to stuff it with fiberglass.) When the drives are seeking, they sound like woodpeckers on PCP -- though I do have three of them going at once, so they kinda add together.

I don't remember if I have the 8MB or the 16MB versions, all I remember is they are 74GB each and they don't support NCQ.

Do you have your drives mounted with rubber insulators?

If you want you can wait for the E6320 since its coming out with 4mb cache in Intel Q2 (2nd quarter. ~ Aprilish)

Funny thing, right when I read your comment on the "vibrating", I thought
about that. I have my Raptors in an Antec drive cage with rubber grommets.
So that just might be the difference.

It was a good enough movie that they could do a part 2 if they wanted.

Yeah it was. But with the exception of John Bridger/Donald Sutherland, the cast is all fairly young and they clicked really well together.
I think with the right script, they could pull off another one or two.

The PSU is either good enough or it isn't, so it's not really a spec that matters. Everything else looks pretty good though, so as long as you didn't buy a cheap-shit motherboard to plug those parts into, you should be fine.

I used the Intel PSN something for the motherboard, I can run BF2 on all high setings but SC looks to be a more hardware hungry game.
