Build me a computer to use for watching tv/movies and some slight gaming use. This will be my first build and plan on doing it during Christmas break. I want it mainly for a bigger monitor to use in my room. I might just go dell, but I think I want a project to keep me busy.

I know these threads pop up daily, so if you don't want to help, don't flame.

My budget is around 750. I'll need a tv turner and multiple sd card reader. I don't know if gaming gpu's are also great for movie viewing? I need help in that area, along with case and power supply, which i have no idea of were to begin.

    thanks for the help

A quick suggestion for a decent build.

    C2D. e4500 (2.2GHz) ~$130
Motherboard - Gigabyte DS3 (Any of the P35's around ~$100).
RAM - 2GB kit (2x1GB) of crucial DDR2 800MHz or Corsair, etc. Doesn't need to be high end. Most 2GB kits are ~50 or so after MIR.
Video card - 8800GT if you can afford it (~250)
    Case - Cooler Master 690 - ~30 - 40 after MIR
    Power supply - Corsair 520hx ~100.

This should be a general starting poiint but might need some tweaking.

Also a decent site to look at for a first time builder. Click Here......

thanks, do you think I need to spend 250 on a 8800gt? or would it be best spent somewhere else>

Probably not unless you think you might want to do some gaming. I would still get a dx10 card at least but I'm not sure of nvidia cards under the 8800gt. (8600 maybe :dunno: ). ATI has some cards also but I'm not fanilar with them, sorry.

Also I forgot about a hard drive. Any sata WD or seagate will be fine. Just pick something at least 250GB. should be ~100 or so.

Lite-on, nec, samsung for dvd burners IMO. I've had all three. currently use a sata lite on w/lightscribe and it's fast but is a tad louder than my old samsung.

I wouldn't go wireless on a desktop unless I had to. just my opinion.

No idea on tv tuners. :hs:

The cooler master case I was referring to is this one.

A good bit less $ than the one you posted. But it had a MIR that ended yesterday. You can always check mwave or zzf because it almost always has a rebate.

Edit, the one you posted has a power supply. I just noticed.

I really don't see any other way to save any significant amoungt of $.

is the 8800GT really worth the extra 150 bucks? I was trying to keep this around 750, and its already way over that. The only game I'm currently playing is COD4.

The competitor of that Radeon is actually the 8600GT.
The 8800GT will pwn both and the diff in performance is huge.
Is it worth it? If you game, I'd say yes.
