Okay, I tested nine different 00 buckshot shells a couple weeks ago. They were:

    2-3/4" Federal Law Enforcement
    2-3/4" Hornady Low Recoil
    2-3/4" Remington Managed-Recoil
    2-3/4" Remington Magnum
    2-3/4" Winchester Winlite
    2-3/4" Winchester Ranger Low Recoil
    2-3/4" Winchester Super-X
    3" Remington Magnum
    3" Winchester Super-X

The test consisted of two different shotguns, an 18.5" Mossberg M590A1 and a 20" Mossberg M590 at 15yds. We each shot three targets (16"x22") and measured the maximum size of the spread as well as how many pellets actually hit the target. Basically, the Federal and Hornady loads were definitely head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to keeping tight groups.

Does the 20" have a different choke? I'm interested to know why the patterns are looser out of the 20" than the 18".

barrel lenght has nothing to do with pattern size. Pattern size is almost entirely choke.

I'm inclined to believe that although neither barrel has interchangable choke tubes one is actually cylinder and the other improved cylinder in constriction.

Very cool and good info. Thanks for the effort. Hornady TAP 8 pellet has always grouped the best for me out of my 18" 870.

Keep in mind though that different barrels will produce different results, you've gotta pattern your own shotguns!

Unforunately, we didn't have time. I'd like to do various distances with the Federal and Hornady loads the next time.

Depends completely on if the distance was measured from the shooter or from the end of the barrel...

I was thinking, one of the principal differences between our guns is my A1 has a heavy barrel while his 590 has a standard barrel...think that's what causing the differences?

    Interesting...box of truth.

    http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot42.htm

I got a all shotgun match 1st weekend of november. Calls for 20 required shots w/ buckshot, 30 slugs, and probably a ton of birdshot. Going to be an expensive match shotgun ammo wise. The slugs alone are $45.

Guess I better re pattern my buck shot with various chokes. I think I might run full choke for any stages that require long range buckshot.
