I was squirrel hunting today with my .22 magnum and i found a nice little dirt pile to sit on while waiting. I hear some rustling in the leaves about 40 yards ahead in thick brush. i scanned the area for squirrels, and i saw a little buck walk right out onto the path. He looked up at me, and then continued to forage in the leaves. all i had was my .22mag, i left my AR in the trunk about 400 yards away. I just sat there watching him eat for about 5 minutes, and every once in a while he'd look up and stare at me for a little bit, didn't seem too afraid. why is it that you always see deer while squirrel hunting, and always see squirrels while deer hunting? I did get the fattest damn squirrel i've ever seen a few minutes later. All in all i was happy

i know i could have killed it with my .22mag. i was shooting CCI 40gr +V and it would've taken it down w/ a good shot. I was hunting on someone elses land and didn't want to take one of their bucks, plus i didn't wanna take a shot w/ such a small bullet.

Well it's good you didn't try to take it out with the under powered round, the poor thing would have probably died 2 days later of blood loss.

82 nga. it's legal where i am. Plus, if you don't have enough confidence in yourself to kill a deer with a .223 from 50 yards, you need to go to the range and practice up.

It's not that I don't trust myself, or necessarily you, just the general public. I saw ALOT of bad shots at deer this weekend. :o

And what .223 bullets are 82 grn? Matchkings?

My parents talked to a guide in Colorado that shot an elk in the eye with a .17 Remington. :eek3:

Sometimes it nice to just sit and watch. You don't have to kill everything that walks in front of you. Practicing self control while hunting is a good thing.

..........but I probably would have shot:o

and that just comes down to personal responsibility. People are generally retarded and I know most hunters shouldn't be hunting with a .223. i would take a shot up to probably 200 yards with a .223 if i had a good shot. I could hit them from further away, but i wouldn't risk it. My coach gave me some 82gr .223 lead in a plain box, so i dunno where they come from. I load them in lake city brass and i'm set to go. they're too long to load in the magazine, so you just have to load them individually.
