I pretty much have just been concentrating on weight lifting but today my mate told me that cardio is equally important as the heart needs to be strong too in order to keep up with the strain of other muscles.

He also said prolonged neglect of cardio can lead to problems such as a stroke.

    WTF is this true? :ugh:

I haven't done cardio in years. After I pound out like 4x10 on the squats I'm wishing I had a little bit better cardio-vascular endurance, I'm gasping for air

That being said, cardio is a good thing for overall health and I recommend you do it.

    Save the HIIT for cutting.

But long duration low intensity cardio should be performed year round.

Cardio is very important no matter what you're doing. I do about 45 minutes of good cardio everyday. It's usually a couple games of full court basketball or running 3+ miles. I do this from 2-3pm and then I lift from 7-8:30pm.

I have always been conscious of my heart and lungs; they need to be pushed hard too. Plus it sucks seeing a guy who can lift 350lbs over his head almost pass out from running half a mile.

So in a short...yes, cardio is important. Not only will it keep your heart and lungs strong but it will also keep your muscles moving in a way they don't when you lift weights.
