So I pulled out my 50mm f/1.4, put it on the camera and it wouldn't auto-focus. I tried manually focusing and it didn't feel as smooth as it used to. I looked closely and the distance indicator wasn't turning nor was the lens moving in and out. It looks like the part that moves the front element in and out is pushed in flush with the rest of the lens. I don't remember it ever being flush. It's borked. :wtc::wtc::wtc:

Should I send it back to Canon or see if any of the local shops can fix it?

Any idea on a cost estimate?

It really depends on if parts are needed. At the old shop I worked at, it would probably be between $40-80 to take apart and realign (no parts) depending on how deep the tech had to go into it.

I guess my best bet is to send it back to Canon.

I'd send it back to Canon.

The nature of the problem will determine the repair cost. Be prepaired though, It can be expensive. They'll give you an estimate after they look at it and determine the problem. You can then decide whether you want to have it fixed or not.

xgf dropped my 24-70, no broken glass, no physical damage other than scratches could be seen. The lens would still focus somewhat but it was difficult to achieve. Something internal was just off. It cost me over $500 to have repaired by Canon.

No, that had nothing to do with it. Actually, it was an accident that was partly my fault. I had put the lens back in my camera bag and closed the flap but I didn't zip it back up. She thought it was good to go, picked up the bag, the flap opened up and the lens hit the ground.

I was :noes: then :wtc: and a little :o, sent it back to Canon and now everything is :bigthumb:.

    The End.

    Yes partly.

I didn't zip up the camera bag. Had it stayed on the ground where I put it, the lens would've never fallen out. I never told her to pick up the bag. That part was all on her.

What do you guys think is a good limit to put on the repairs?

Assuming you can get that lens used for $290 (what I paid for it) should I just go a max of 1/2 the cost ($145)? Maybe $200?

Also, any chance of the lens being worth anything broken like this? If the repair is over 200 i'd likely sell it broken.

The lens I'm referring to cost me over $1,200 when I bought it new. So a little over $500 for the repair sounded a lot better than spending another $1,200 for a new one.
