I bought a canon xti and the thrifty 50mm last year. This get's me by for the most part, but I'd like to do more. Given I'm a broke ass, what would one recommend for cheap versatility in 1-2 lenses.

Also do you guys have a defacto recommendation for cheap off camera flash?

Anyone use paint.net or other free editing software?

We should just make this a thread for cheap beginner tips

Let me get the first couple of questions out of the way...

what focal range are you looking for?

    what's your budget?

Knew that was coming. Let's just say portraits across the room and random pictures at large sporting events. Budget would be as low as possible.

google's picassa will edit canon raw files and its free. there's a skin for gimp so it looks almost exactly like photoshop.

off camera flash, go with any old manual flash, check thrift stores and pawn shops. get a set of cactus triggers, a cheap flash stand, and umbrella.

for cheap off camera flash, take a look at the canon 540ez. adorama has them all the time for like 95 bucks. 7 stops and an impressive recycle time. personally I would choose this over the 285hv. only downside is canon has no onboard PC connector

that's what i was talking about, the dial on the front that has the power settings. it went 1/16 -> 1/4 and too many times i found myself putting it on 1/4 and then having to put a nd gel on just to get the power level where i wanted it.
