my (now) ex boyfriend and i just split up after a long time coming. what's the best way to go about getting over someone, short of going out and sleeping with a bunch of people?

Time, spending time with friends, doing stuff for you, and not worrying about being in a relationship for a while.

yup. usually ive found that in relationships that have been needing a break up that I lose a part of who I am and who I know myself to be. The last relationship i took like a year and a half off and just learned about myself and what I like and dont like. I dated here and there but was never happy until I learned to be ok by myself. Now im in a relationship where Im able to find a balance.

Anything to keep your mind off it is pure gold. Spending time with friends is important but you time is good also.

For me I spent an hour or two at the gym swimming with earplugs in. From there it was just me and the water, and my brain running through checklists to make sure i'm doing everything right. There's no time for your mind to wander and think of anything else. When you're done, not only are you better physically for it, but you're mind is clear as well for at least a few hours.

I know at least 3 really close friends who started lifting after nasty breakups. You end up in better shape, with a ton of self-confidence, maybe with a new social circle to occupy at least a bit of time with, and it's pretty cathartic.

Go out, have fun, and enjoy yourself. Good friends are priceless to have around because they will aid in these things. Enjoying yourself and having fun are sure to lighten your heart and keep your mind off it most of the time.

The best line I've heard about breaking up is...

"See breaking up as a good thing...it'll bring you one step closer to the person you're actually going to be with."

Talk to friends and find new hobbies. Don't sit around the house doing nothing because it'll only drive you nuts.

I think about it this way...

Relationship is like a party where you get wasted. The more you drink (fall in "love") the harder the breakup, if you are not careful you will have the worst hangover. Hangover - breakup, if you dont do anything about it (eating, drinking water) the longer it will take to get over... you got the point. BTW some people have died from "alcohol". How is that for a metaphor?

I've found those kind of things that keep your mind off it work fine, during the day. What keeps you from thinknig about it when your going to bed and it's on your mind.. there's no way to hide from it then.
