Marvel just started a monthly subscription service.
There are some dead serious flaws with it.
    However.....
To someone like yourself that would probably benefit by 'sampling' things from the Marvel library it is an entirely legit/legal way to do this.
They offer a month to month subscription that you can cancel whenever you want.

    go to www.marvel.com

Go to a comic shop, look around and buy what looks interesting. It really depends on what you like. Trade paperbacks are a good place to start. Usually have a whole story contained over a few books.

it's more difficult now then it used to be. there are so many alternate universes, team-ups, limited runs, etc, that you can't just start with issue #1.

like everyone said, go to the comic store, see what they have, find something you like, and start there.

check out anything written by warren ellis, he is freakin awesome.

Those are two different grades of comics. Sin City is more of a pulp comic, I'd read old The Spirit comics by Wil Eisner if you enjoyed it. The Watchmen is one of the best comics ever written, probably THE best comic written. Read Neil Gaiman's Sandman and Lucifer if you like comics like The Watchmen.

Some of the Vertigo stuff might interest you. 100 Bullets, Y the Last Man, Fables or Preacher for example. More adult themed stories. Not a bunch of dudes running around in tights. V for Vendetta as well. Same writer as Watchmen.
