Little chart I whipped up, 2008 gun death values, 2008 Brady scores. I have DC Same Brady score as Kalifornia. State death rates include suicides and accidental deaths.

your graph does not represent the data effectively do to state populations.

It's per 100K of population, regardless of how many 100Ks they have, so yes it is correct.

where did you get the data that says that Alaska has a higher death rate per capita than every other state other than Washington DC? It would seem that the data is skewed since states like NY and CA have a higher overall death rate, but they also have related populations.

    seriously

so, the states with the best brady rating have the lowest body count?

    that's what i see.

    wtf

It breaks down the Brady scores ( higher meaning more gun control laws ) with the strictest states from the left, overlaid on it's rate of gun deaths per 100K of it's population. I wanted to see a correlation one way or the other, and isn't really get the results I expected, but the numbers are laid out objectively for your consideration.

I hear that Alaska has a high suicide rate. Apparently six months of not seeing the sun causes people to lose their shit.

As far as that graph goes, it would appear that gun control has no correlation in either direction as to the frequency of gun deaths.

I grew up in Alaska and saw gunfights over firewood.... The numbers do not surprise me at all. And yes, in winter there are a LOT of suicides.

now subtract accidents and suicides from that plot and watch what happens.

Werd. Let's use "Gun Murders" or even "Violent gun crime" if you want.

A far more interesting graph would be comparing population density and gun death rate.

Yeah, actual crimes committed with guns would be more useful than including things like suicides.

It means that gun deaths are not correlated in either direction with how strict gun laws are (or are not). I suppose including all gun deaths is relevant since the Brady Bunch uses any and all gun deaths as a reason to ban them.

I think the more relevant study is the Brady Bunch rankings vs. violent crime rates. I don't believe that this correlates either.

IMHO, the numbers don't correlate because A) criminals don't follow gun laws, no matter how strict and B) not enough citizens carry for it to make a significant impact on over-all crime stats.

    You fail at math

Wyoming has 534k so take 20x5.34=106.8
California has 36.8mil so take 8x36.8=294.3

apparently you fail at word problems

    (534,000/100,000)*20 = 106.8 :bigthumb:

    (38,800,000/100,000)*8 = 3,104 :ugh2:

Violent crime rate per the 2008 UCR (# of violent crimes divided by state population) plotted against Brady rating. Don't really see a correlation.

Definately wouldn't have thought Tenessee and Missouri to have the 2nd and 3rd highest crime rates, respectively

perhaps a scatter-plot with the X axis being Brady score, and Y axis being gun deaths per capita, or violent gun crimes per capita, or something like that would be more useful?

also you should submit this to stumbleupon

You know you can put the correlation coefficient in excel right?

I'm sure I can but I don't usually mess with that so I don't know how.
