So I bought this iPod from a friend of mine.. and I plugged it into my machine and it basically says I need to format it before I can put any more music on it. I really dont want to lose any of the music already on it.. how can I get around having to reformat the entire thing to start all over?

You don't *need* iTunes to work with it, but it really makes things a lot easier. WinAmp works but I've had unusual outcomes using WinAmp to manage the music on my ipods.

Look for a program called Sharepod. It will let you copy music from the Ipod to your hard drive and keep the ID3 tags.
