After all the bs I've been going through with various sellers, I bought myself a Canon Xsi for a steal: Body with 8k actuations, two 2gb, one 4gb card, and extra battery for only $350 shipped. Now what's a basic lens that will still produce good pictures? Oh well, at least one part is taken care of!

You can get a cheap 50mm 1.8 to get you going...

Would I be better doing that or spending ~180-200 on something nicer?

Look for a Tamron 17-50mm 2.8. Even better look for a local store around you that sells Promaster gear. Promaster re brands the Tamron's and sells them for about $150 cheaper. Same lens, just cheaper.

They only go for $200 dealer cost, so you can probably talk them down from the normal $350 retail. Lifetime warranty on the Promaster too vs 6 year for Tamron.

Good deal on the camera. I wish I'd found something like that when I was shopping. I settled for the XS, $452.00 from Sears with kit lens. (Sears will price match Walmart's online price, so you get it immediately, plus you get the 10% price match discount).

That being said, the kit lens takes decent shots. If you want cheap, find the 18-55 and a 50mm 1.8. That's all I've got, and I haven't really run into a situation yet where I couldn't get a good shot with those lenses.

A decent zoom lens will be my next purchase, but that's down the road a little, since I'm going to have to shell out more than 60 bucks. :(

I got mine with the 50mm f/1.8 for 425...and then just purchased the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 for 360. This will be what I take with my to London next week, although I'm a little upset that 50mm is the longest reach I'll have...but hopefully I won't regret buying the 17-50 as opposed to renting it along with a 70-200.

This guy speaks the truth. 50mm as your only lens on APS-C is :ugh:. You'll be backing up everywhere trying to fit shit in the frame.

    I'd rather shoot 50mm outside than 35mm.

It all depends on what you shoot. I'd prefer the 18-55 IS kit lens over a 50mm if I only had to have ONE lens and the budget was about $100.

Canon really needs to make a ~$200 30mm APS-C prime like Nikon did. Then again, they probably sell enough 50s that they don't think it's worth it.

it's really not that big of a deal on the xsi, and 30~35mm is as good a match for the xsi as a 50 is for film/ff. the 50 shoots like an ~85 on the xsi and that's bit rough as a do-everything lens. It would force him to get better faster, but the 35 will be a lot more fun on that camera.

    also, I don't really like the 50/1.8. I'm a whore, so don't take gear rec's from me.
