right now im using a canon eos d60 as my first dslr and its been working just fine, although im going to be getting an internship for fashion photography and was wondering what you guys would suggest for a new camera body that will meet the quality standards i need, but without breaking my bank... something more entry level but still an upgrade to what i have now. i was thinking a 10d or 20d?

edit - the new 400d sounds like a good option for what i described but i hate the "persona" that goes with the rebel, and i dont want something that more cheap feeling and plasticky than what i have now.

You will be frowned upon unless you have a MKII at the minimum.

just out of curiosity, what makes you go with the 20d over the 400d, i realize nobody has used the 400d yet but at a glance what stands out to you?

also are there any nikons that can compete or do better for what i need?

5D was pretty cheap with a dell coupon the other day, that's where I'd go.

If you can't afford it, do you have enough lenses, flashes, strobes? etc... for your D60?

I'd spend the most money on glass and gear before the body.

If you do upgrade the body...

10D wouldn't be any upgrade really, just like the 30D isn't an upgrade to the 20D...

A used 20D should be had for around the price of the new 400D I would think... that would not be a bad deal at all. However you are still at 1.6x crop. It is a much faster action camera than the D60 and to some extent the 5D so it depends on how many FPS you need. anything with digic II will blow away the D60/10D/300D in buffer, startup, etc...

and I've seen damn good 8x10's from a 10D which your D60 should be similar in...

the main consideration in picking the body should be based on the print size and shooting speed/buffer depth you need.

yeah the 10d and d60 are basically the same, as far as image quality should be concerned anyway, i would like something with digic2. the only thing i really dont like about my camera is the startup and review time are so slow :(

so you think nice glass would make up for a faster body?

I'd go with a better lens at a longer focal length, such as the 135 f/2.0L or 85 f/1.8 since the glass you'll use when you upgrade the body. If you decide to upgrade, go with at least the 20D. Don't bother with the 10D since you'll have the same slow start up and slow review time. Image quality is good but it's just older technology.

    it's a downgrade from the D60..

    a budget upgrade would be:

    used 20d
    50 1.4
    100 2.0

should be like $1200, less if you can grab used lenses from upgraders...

and you should have at least a 430ex for fill flash, or go with a cheap sb-26 and do full manual

You can get a used 1d for like 900 :dunno:

You'll need all the FPS because of the meth the models will be tweaking on.

1 series is a wonderful camera but remember it's still in the same gen as your D60 in regards to startup time, etc.

It weighs a fucking ton as well if that matters.

I may be wrong but I don't think you can even zoom on the preview images on the 1D...

I would say go for the 1D if you were going to need digital + weather sealed + 8fps on the cheap.

the 20D at 5fps is overall better. double the MP which is a difference for sure.

then again the 1.3 crop factor is my favorite... and the 1D CCD does amazingly good job at capturing reds without custom curves or underexposing a tad.

If you go with the 20D there is a great 17-55 2.8 IS EFS lens that there is no equivalent for on 1.3 or 1.0 cameras, and you get more reach out of the fast primes for less money, so the 50 1.4 becomes a cheap and good for fashion/portrait 80 1.4

I thought about buying a 1D years ago when the 20D came out but it was still behind the 20D in too many ways.
