I have my eye on a 1965 Chevelle Malibu and its going to need some body work and paint. Never had this kind of work done before. What could i expect in terms of cost for body work and a decent gloss black paint job? I'm not looking for a show stopper, but something that looks nice and clean.

    Heres the car I'm considering:

    $5,000 min

  3. A proper paint job, with good bodywork on a car like that will probably cost you 7 to 10 grand. Black is the worst possible color to try to paint a car on a budget, and and every tiny defect in the bodywork will be highlighted by the black paint.

  4. That being said, that looks like a great project. I'd offer the guy 9k for it, and I'd probably pay the full asking price if he was stubborn. I really love Chevelles.

Really? you have any recommendations? The car looks pretty solid besides the old tranny. I'm going to see it and drive it tomorrow.

  7. Recommendations about what? The body looks ok. I'm sure that you'll find plenty of little issues when you start taking the old paint off. I bet you there's an easy 2-3 grand worth of bodywork to be done. Lining up the panels, filling in the holes from the old trim, etc... all add up. Other than that, it's cool that it's got power disc brakes. The exhaust looks like shit, and the powerglide is pretty much worthless. Depending on what you are looking to do with the car you have tons of options when it comes to the transmission. If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to help. I was really into chevelles for a few years, and I still miss my 69.

That one looks like it would be a great driver once you swapped the glide for something with another gear or two.

How expensive are the new GM 6-cogs, and has anybody developed a stand-alone controller for them?
