I'm considering selling my Interceptor OTV w/ IIIA inserts, groin and neck protectors and instead going with a concealable plate carrier and standalone Level IV+ plates. Two downsides to this:

    1. No side protection
    2. No fragmentation protection

    The positives are:

    1. Concealable
    2. Lighter

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

What would you be using the body armor for?

    Conversation piece.

    ...

It's part of the SHTF preps so will probably never see actual use.

Being as it's use is likely negligible, why not just stick with what you have?

I can switch with little financial impact...maybe $50. I like the idea of having more protection in terms of more rounds stopped but the area of protection decreases a bit.

IMO if you are going to use it for a SHTF setup then I would not worry about it being concealable or really being lighter. If anything keep what you have or upgrade it with something similar but with better protection.

Have you looked into Dragon Skin? Although you can not order it as part of the "General Public" any law enforcement, military or government agency can order it with ID and the body armor is rather customizable to just about any way you want it. http://www.pinnaclearmor.com/body-armor/dragon-skin.php

Rejected by the DoD for failing to provide more protection than current armor, I believe. Plus it's way overpriced. I could just get a pair of Level 4+ plates and throw them in my current OTV w/ soft inserts.

Oh I am sure its not cheap, and in that case if I were you just get the Level 4+ trauma plates.

I find it a real stretch to think of ever actually using it. The only real danger we face is a natural disaster. Even then odds are you'll be out sweating your butt off with a chain saw and putting your house back together and won't be patrolling the neighborhood with your buddies in body armor on the assault lawn tractor. The only possible thing I can come up with is an extended disaster. In that case I suppose I could see it possible that you might eventually be going out on the town when things are still rough and a relatively light concealable piece of armor under your clothes might be good.

Thats still one in a million. Interceptor set? Never.

I look at it as a statistical probability. The probability I'll need my armor? a fraction of a percent. Probability I'll get ambushed/patrol while in it? a fraction of that fraction. It still functions as a platform for competition/training, minus the plate, so it serves a purpose.

IIIA stops most threats you'll probably face, up to and including 9mm from SMGs, and .44 Mag from a rifle/carbine.
If you really want better, get some SAPIs or other compatible III or IV plates to add to the Interceptor. IBA, while not the best and coolest, is still pretty darn good armor.

Personally, I'd keep the greater body area protection from the IBA rather than upgrade to IV plates that cover much less area in exchange for protecting against a farther extreme on the "threats" bell curve.

Or, for concealability? Get a IIIA Matrix, Second Chance, etc. ballistic vest to wear under a shirt (a la police), maybe add a trauma pad, plate, or insert, and consider a rifle plate carrier as an over-the-top option if you actually seem to be facing rifle-armed threats.

And the possibility that you'll be shot at (while wearing the armor) by AP rifle threats (necessitating IV or higher protection) or maybe 7.62 Tok (but I think III will stop that...not sure) is a very tiny fraction, of the fraction of a fraction.

III stops regular 7.62 NATO rounds, just wont stop AP, or 3006 AP

Level IV plates dont cover less area there just fatter which is going to give you less mobility in moving around

My biggest concern is SHTF and one of you AR/AK fuckers comes after me and my preps, thus the need for Level 4+ plates and a helmet. :squint:

My current armor is IIIA so only pistol rounds. Will probably just pick up a set of ceramic Level 4+ plates to augment it.

    Bah, don't bother.

If anyone was going to be smart about coming after someone as well-equipped as you, then they'd just kill you in your sleep or at some other unassuming time instead of calling you 45 min ahead of time and announcing to you that they were going to make an armed assault on your house.
