Found a Pointblank III-A vest with chest, back, and groin plates (I can't remember for sure, but I think they're IV - IIRC it said 7.62APM2), for $500.

    Should I do it?

Sounds like a waste of money to me.

I'm not asking whether you think I need it. I'm asking whether it's a good buy for that price.

(registration required but really worth it, you need to read up about body armor there if you're buying)

The US Armor Eagle Enforcer line gets the most praise (note that some of their other lines are laminates and do not).

Also check this thread out http://www.tacticalforums.com/cgi-bin/tacticalubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=78;t=001629 and read up about the failed nij standard, the move to the fbi testing protocol and back to woven materials, etc.

They are warranted for 5 years from date of manufacture. That is mostly a liability thing, and a way to get police departments to buy new vests. About two months ago, we shot up an old vest at the pd; this thing was about 15 years old. Still stopped every handgun and shotgun round.

For the price, I'd say it's not horrible for what it sounds like. This thing isn't a concealable vest, rather a raid type system, correct?

FWIW, I have two vests. One is a Level II ABA Extreme, which is really light and thin (and comfortable) and the other is a Safariland Level III which sucks goat ass but offers a lot of protection. Guess which one I wear more?

Vests do you no good if you don't plan on wearing it, so get something at least a little comfortable. Of course, if this is for SHTF, I guess you can disregard because I'm sure the vest is only a portion of the equipment you may be wearing, and none of that shit is comfortable.

    YMMV

Definitely not concealable. It's big and heavy, with 1/2" plates in it.

Yeah, it's 95/5 "it'd be cool to have"/SHTF. Definitely nothing I'd wear on a regular basis for several reasons, not the least of which is that I spend just about 0% of my time getting shot at. :mamoru:

On that note though that remember that older vests are often 100% woven kevlar, a material that is well known to hold up for decades. Laminates are the popular thing in more recent years though and there are some that are well known to NOT hold up well to the stress that go with aging and use. The worst of course was zylon but the others still suffer, especially from heat and moisture exposure. It is not safe to assume that all armor will age well, the material it is made of will be the deciding factor.

I've shot well expired vests and they've held up fine. Might be a point to consider / negotiate with the seller though.

Also avoid Armorworks plates...17 of 300 failed in DoD testing and they were removed from the bid that Ceradyne won.

If SHTF happens or someone decides to raid your house the vest will be more than worth it's weight in gold. I'd rather have on gun and one vest than 20guns and no vest.

AH. Ceradyne is who made the plates that it comes with. I couldn't remember the name, but now that you said it, I'm sure that's the one.

Level 3 cert requires that the plate withstand 3 7.62x51 hits...

No body armor is rated for 7.62x54R and 30.06 doesnt have that much more energy than 308
