I saw someone actually mount a speaker using a screw that went through the fiberglass hull.

I don't see why you couldn't do it. My experience with boats is limited.

An ex-gf had a small open bow inboard/outboard. I made a few small boxes, mounted them, and installed a pair of 6.5" components, 50Wx2 amp, and headunit. It sounded decent, but the staging sucked and it could have trouble keeping up volume if you're full tilt on the throttle. This pair was a marine audio brand as the speakers were rather unprotected.

A fraternity brother has a 28' sailboat. We had alot more space to work with and were able to get 5.1 in the cabin, 4x6.5" components on deck that have to be taken down if the weather get's nasty. We did manage to hideaway two twelves in a storage spot between the cabin and deck. They sound good, but due to the location they requier alot of power for good volume, especially outside. All of this is standard car stereo.

we usually put jbl subs in boats... we don't sell them, but bazooka brand tubes sound good as well.

we usualy do clarion marine heads
    Arc KAR amps
    meh any speakers.
    JL subs

We put subs in all the time. Im installing 2 10w6's downfire in a boat tomorrow. The ARC audio boat has 4 15"s, something like 10 8"s..etc Over 100 speakers. Boats sound far far superior to cars.

yeah, my buddy had.....starting out, 8 alpine marine 6.5s a pair of kicker K6.2s, a pair of kicker R25s. all of this run off of a KX800.4. then for subs, 2 Viper (yeah the same Viper) 15" DVCs on a KX1200.1. Red Top, 8D, and Irragi custom alternator. also had the clarion marine head, cdc, and sirius. lol.....it was by far the loudest boat on the lake.

We had Kicker put a system in our boat (we've done some of Kickers interiors for their demo cars). They just put their regular car audio stuff in our boat.:dunno: It's a 23ft. openbow runabout.
