    Hello all, i'm looking to get an E36 sometime in the relatively near future. i considered an M3 but decided spending $4-10k more on the ///M could be better used to mod the hell out of a 325is/328is.
    my questions are:
    is there any real advantage to getting a 328 over a 325? i do plan on supercharging at least (AA turbo kit would be better if i can justify spending $10k on just a turbo setup).
    the OBDII thing has me guessing also. i'm very familiar with japanese cars (specifically OBDI nissans) and a friend has a 2000 audi A4 1.8TQMS with several mods, i dont like how sensitive the ECU/feedback system is maybe thats because my maxima wont throw an ECU code or go into limp mode if i try to make it do so. i have owned 2 E30 325e's in the past and loved them however at the time i didnt know my asshole from my earhole about cars, so i sold one (the other is a long story) and bought a 1992 nissan maxima (tons of mods, i'll elaborate later if anyone really cares). my plan is to keep the maxima and get something newer with more class, comfort, potential for simple (read: not totally custom) upgrades. also RWD is far superior in every way to FWD and in my opinion for fair weather driving, AWD:eek4: .

    finally, i know about the cracking/tearing rear subframe mounts but what else should i look for other than things that'll stick out such as sticky switches, broken electronics, oil leaks, etc.... i'm looking to spend the least possible obviously but up to about $9,000 for something in perfect condition and less than 100,000 miles wont be a problem. 5speed, 2 door, under 100k, heated seats and sunroof are things i must have. colors and such i can work out when the time comes. should i steer clear of E36s? how reliable are they when boosted?

    why? is a bone stock 3.2L M3 better than a very modded 325/328?? i'm not talking just for power, coilovers, subframe mount bracing, LSD, x-brace, brakes, wheels, all kinds of stuff..

    my car is basically what you do turning a 325 into m3. reason i didnt buy an m3 is because i wanted a vert and insurance.

    building up a 325 to m3 spec is expensive.

    motor = 3500
    lsd = 500
    suspension = 800
    wheels/tires = 1200 at least.

    but he advantage is you canbuild the car past m3 spec.

    so it comes down to how far are you going to modify the car. if you going to keep it fairly stock get an m3 if you going tomodify everythign get a 325.

    I have owned a 95 AA turbo M3 with a built motor.

    If you want to mod a BMW and want to make good reliable power I would suggest getting a M3 over a 325 or 328. The M3 came with a ZF tyranny and the 325 came with a Getrag witch was a weaker tyranny. Also the M3 did have bigger brakes witch is something not really needed to be upgraded because the stockers are really good. A 328 would be my 2nd option because those came with a ZF box. But you have to spend allot of money on brakes and suspension.

    Look for a 95 M3 with low miles and get that. I would suggest doing the MAF, Injectors AA chip and exhaust/intake for starters. That's good for 105 traps with a very low 13s.

    Don't do dumb mods like a Clutch stop, Under driven pulleys. If you do find a few Ms when looking at them make sure the owner did not install sway bars. The mount point usually snaps. For suspension just throw in new Bilostein shocks and call it a day.

    IMHO

    everyone on offtopic will tell you to get the M3 cuz its an M3... you get the girls and the respect. a specialist will tell you to never force induct a BMW because they arent necessarily built for the purpose and thats why they never come from the fac like that. DONT BUY AN ALREADY SUPER/TURBOCHARGED M3. you will get a piece of shit and thats 4 out of 5 chance. 325 and 328 are diff years thus different cars to tune. if you're all about bragging rights, buy an M3 and find a specialist to get to know very well. the OBDII will give you a little bigger of gains from a turbo but the OBDI(95 only) is a true tuner car because the software is less complex and the offset on the tires is not staggered(less understeer) i would go for the reg. 3 personally cuz insurance is cheaper and the mods will not only prove as bragging rights but they'll be very significant changes. it's like chosing the fat chick with the good heart... then starving her to death till shes a hottie. the end result is very very similar if you go all out... just make sure you find that specialist that will be willing to hook you up. future advice... watch your revs and your temp. while you drive. otherwise you'll be left without a car and an empty wallet afterwards. dont track your force inducted BMW unless you're a baller!!!
