I know it's been done to death, but now that I drove my '03 330i ZHP into a ditch, it's time for a replacement.

Assuming I don't buy new, I can find a few 08s and a VERY few 09s in the 135i coupe with 6MT, and I can find a decent number of 07s and very few 08s in the 335i coupe with 6MT for somewhere in the neighborhood of 34-35k asking price.

I have only been able to drive the 135i in the automatic version (blech) but the handling edge was obvious vs. the 335i, and it appears that none of the "sport" option packages actually effect the suspension.

Obviously the engine is spectacular. Should I be leery of going back to the 07 or were there no worrisome bugs in the early models?

The packaging of the 135i is great and the handling is spectacular, brakes are spectacular. The rear seat is pretty weak though, and while it appeals to the good enthusiasts out there, I will get irritated at stupid bitches asking why I got the "cheap" BMW.

The 335i is a little sloppier, particularly coming from the ZHP - how much suspension upgrade is necessary to put a little more edge into the handling department? The rear seat is actually at least as roomy as the rear seat in our 03 sedan so it becomes a great 4-person cruiser for blasting out to Vegas, etc. That's a big point in its favor. And it loses the 1-series stigma in exchange for becoming just another anonymous 3-series that nobody gives a fuck about.

Any other people out there made this decision? I'd like to hear your thought processes.

I've got my eye on an 07 335 at the local dealer, Black on Coral Red interior. :yum:

The only 6mt 135s I've found are black/black, which looks nice but it's a little boring. I actually want a white/black one but they're impossible to find.

Ordering a new one to spec is not an option - not just financially (at least on the 1), but because I really need to get a car in a LOT less than 2 months, and all of the dealers I've checked with have NO 6mt cars in stock.

Oh, also, ALL of the stock wheels on the 335 coupe look like ASS; the 135's 18"s are at least passable.

My problem is that when I look at the 3, I feel like I'm going to blow at least 1200-1500 just to put decent wheels on it, and then another $1000+ MINIMUM if I want it to hold the road anything like the 135's stock suspension.

I do recall that the early ones were desperately in need of an oil cooler, particularly when tracked and/or reflashed for additional boostification.

    I can't get into the 1 series' styling. I'd go with a 3.

I'm with you on the annoyance of the "cheap BMW" stigma. I drove both back to back and the 135 is clearly the more enjoyable drive. I don't have a need for a back seat and as such, the 135 would be the choice for my driving pleasure. That said, I think the 135 looks good in side profile, rear 3/4 shot, but not from the front (angle or otherwise).

Long version: driving home at 4:30 am after dropping my wife off at a friend's house because we were in a huge fight, she was drunk and I wouldn't let her drive herself. I was trying to blow off some steam so I took a back road that I haven't driven for 2 years instead of the freeway; I was getting REALLY tired and starting to lose focus, and on what was previously a straightaway, they were constructing a new bridge and had abruptly re-routed the road around the construction. My tired eyes followed the line of the old asphalt and by the time I realized what was happening I blew through a pile of cinder blocks and down into the construction project.

Cliffs: don't drive tired, don't drive angry, don't get married.

and by "into a ditch" i don't mean like I slid off the side of the road into a parallel ditch; the ditch was perpendicular to the road and I drove into it nose-first. Car was FUCKED. I was lucky the cinder blocks slowed me instead of the bottom of the ditch or the new bridge they were building.
